Typical leaf anatomy of a C3 grass

No palisade mesophyll; small bundle sheath cells with a few chloroplasts

Brome-Grass leaf blade cross-section showing one major and two minor veins, homogeneous mesophyll of isodiametric cells and other tissues. Note that the bundle sheath cells are small and mostly lack chlorophyll, the feature characteristic of C3 grasses.

1 = adaxial (upper) epidermis, 2 = adaxial sclerenchyma of major vein, 3 = bundle sheath, 4 = metaxylem vessel of a major vein, 5 = phloem, 6 = homogeneous mesophyll, 7 = minor vein, 8 = abaxial (rib) sclerenchyma, 9 = abaxial (lower) epidermis, 10 = non-glandular hairs, 11 = stoma
